About Our Department
The Department of Geological Engineering provides general and vocational education to its students by conducting basic and applied research through undergraduate and graduate education programs in order to contribute to the development of science and to help the technical and economic development of the region and our country. In line with this purpose, our department has adopted the principle of educating engineers who can work in environments that require features such as problem identification, problem solving, ability to work as part of a team and leadership in matters related to "Geological Engineering".
The Euphrates basin, where our university is located, is rich in engineering structures and underground resources. In addition, our region is located on the 1st degree earthquake zone. In this context, the program primarily aims to train manpower for the research and development of the resources of our region. Considering that there is a need for engineers to work on these issues throughout our country, it is clear that the aims of our institution are in harmony with the needs of the region and the country. Although it is not directly included in the institution's mission, ensuring that our graduates live a happy and successful life is among our department goals.
History and Devolopment
The Department of Geological Engineering was established within the Faculty of Science in 1977 and started education and training, and was affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering with Law No. 2547 in 1982. Its academic activities were carried out with the support of faculty members from institutions such as Ankara University, Ege University, MTA General Directorate until 1985, and during this period, it completed its staff with academics partly trained within its own structure and partly from outside academics. Today, it serves with 19 faculty members and 12 research assistants. There are 3 administrative staff and 2 janitors working in our department. Undergraduate student quota is 10 in formal education.
The Department of Geological Engineering, which moved to its current building in 1990, has 6 classrooms, Microscopy, Macroscopy, Rock and Soil Mechanics, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Sedimentology and sample preparation laboratories, a computer room, a thin section workshop, a Seminar Hall, 1 study room, a meeting room and a student hall. The cafeteria continues its operations with its volumetric facilities.
Vision ve Mission
Our vision is to be a department that will make significant contributions to national and universal development by providing education quality at the level of other Geological Engineering departments in our country and around the world, and the knowledge and technology produced by the education and training it provides.
Our mission is to understand the structure and evolution of the earth; To train creative geological engineers and researchers who are experts in their fields, equipped with universal and up-to-date knowledge, have interdisciplinary working skills, who work on the fields of revealing natural resources, minimizing natural disaster damages, protecting the natural environment, examining the geological environments that form the basis of engineering practices, To engage independent researchers with its academic staff and to disseminate and share their results; To provide scientific support to the public and industry by collaborating with implementing organizations.
